Mask Requirements and Safety Measures
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We hope you are enjoying these last few weeks of summer. As we approach the beginning of a new school year, we wanted to share the following updates from the Archdiocese of San Francisco, developed with guidance from other health and safety organizations.
The State of California has issued the following requirements:
- All K-12 students are required to mask indoors.
- Adults in K-12 school settings are required to mask when sharing indoor spaces with students.
- Masks are optional outdoors for all in K-12 school settings.
- Consistent with guidance from the 2020-21 school year, schools must develop and implement local protocols to enforce the mask requirements.
Please read more in this letter from Superintendent Pamela Lyons (version here in Spanish).
Physical distancing and cohort scheduling are currently no longer required. As we return to five days a week of in-person learning, we are committed to the safety of our students just as we were able to do this past school year. There exists the possibility that we will need to implement other safety measures, whether mandated or at our discretion.
Thank you for your patience and flexibility. We are excited so see students soon!
Sincerely,
Mr. Tim Reardon
Interim President
Note: If you have questions and concerns about safely returning to school, please read this important article co-written by the deputy director of the San Francisco Department of Public Health and chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Global Health at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals.
Summer Reading
We are doing one school one book as a way to continue to build our family spirit. The novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon, gives an engaging, funny, and moving story to share and a place from which we can discuss the themes of empathy, inclusivity, and understanding that are at the core of the Riordan family spirit.
See this link for more details, and a list of other reading recommendations for this summer!
If you've read something good, we'd love to hear about it and why: email info@riordanhs.org.
Buying Books
Riordan’s online bookstore through e-Campus opens July 19, and free shipping is available July 19-25. Please note that some digital texts may take up to 5 to 7 days to arrive for download. If you have any questions, contact the e-Campus Customer Service Team by email, Live Chat, or by calling (844) 523-8980.
Students should use their Riordan email to order, and new students can use a regular email. Fall semester schedules (Classes 1-4) can be viewed in PowerSchool.
Teachers will be giving instructions about other materials needed for courses during the first days of school. There is no pre-set supply list.
Schedule Change Requests
If you would like to request a schedule change, or have questions about your schedule, please fill out this form.
Schedule change requests will only be honored for the following reasons:
- You were misplaced in a class that you are not qualified for or did not request.
- You have changed your mind about taking an AP or honors course.
- You need to retake a course that you were not able to repair during the summer.
We will not make any changes based on teacher or time of day preference. Not all requests will be granted.
"0" Period
Many of you in the Band program will have a course in the "0" period. This is a class that will take place from 7:50 - 8:35 am during the semester that you do not have your other band course. This was created so that students could attend a band class all year. Your band instructor will provide more information about this before the start of the school year.
If after the summer, you are still academically ineligible, you will also be enrolled in a "0" period class for Academic Support. You will be informed of this at orientation.
4x4 Bell Schedule and Lunch News
We will still utilize the 4x4 system next year. Classes listed in Periods 1-4 are the classes that you have in the first semester, and the classes that you have in Periods 5-8 are the classes you have in the second semester.
Many of you will have a "free period" where you have no class listed for a given period. This is a study period, and during orientation, you will find out where you will report during that period.
Next year we will have two lunch periods. During orientation, you will find out whether or not you have early or late lunch. Both of those will be reflected on your PowerSchool schedule when the school year starts.
Please view a copy of the bell schedule for next year, which is different then the previous semester; we plan on being back in-person five days a week in the fall and students are required to attend all days.

Class Schedules, PowerSchool, and Purchasing Books
Student schedules for next year can be viewed in PowerSchool after July 1. If you have any questions about how to access PowerSchool, please contact PowerSchool Manager Michael O'Brien, mobrien@riordanhs.org. If you would like to request a change to your schedule, you may do so here.
Starting July 19, new students can purchase books in Riordan’s Virtual Bookstore. Student textbooks are listed in one place, and shopping by course makes it simpler to order the correct materials all at once. Riordan student email address will be available on July 30. Prior to that time, please use a personal email when checking out of the bookstore.
Teachers will be giving instructions about other materials needed for courses during the first days of school. There is no pre-set supply list.
Technology / 1:1 iPad Program
All students are required to have an iPad for the first day of classes.*
We recommend the iPad Air or above, the iPad Mini 3 or above, or the iPad Pro. While the iPad Mini is an acceptable choice, it has a much smaller screen, which can reduce the impact of certain visually interactive apps in the sciences or the arts. Students pursuing digital media courses and extracurriculars may want the larger format screen with retina display, available on both the iPad Air and the iPad Pro.
The iPad needs to be running the latest iOS at all times. To update this on the iPad, go to Settings > General > Software Update. While you are able to get older versions of the iPad, please be aware that the iPad 1 is not an acceptable model as it cannot handle the processing speeds necessary for digital textbooks.
*Exceptions:
- Transfer students are allowed to use MacBooks or Chromebooks. Otherwise, we encourage them to buy the iPad Air.
- Engineering Program students are not required to have an iPad, but are required to have a MacBook—at minimum a MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM.

- Headphones and earbuds must be removed upon entering the school building and cannot be worn between classes. Headphones and earbuds can be worn during class with teachers’ explicit permission, but must be removed before leaving class. Students who fail to remove earphones or earbuds will be liable for an after school detention. Headphones or earbuds may be confiscated for repeated failure to remove them.

Parent Pledge Program
Support Riordan through the Parent Pledge Program here.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Congratulations on your child’s acceptance to Archbishop Riordan High School! We are pleased to welcome you and your family to the Riordan community.
Each year we ask new parents to participate in the Parent Pledge Program, a four-year commitment made by each family. Over the past few years, parent support has allowed the school to make number of key improvements to both the curriculum and facilities, including the introduction of a biomedical sciences program this fall, the recent locker room upgrades, remodeling of several classrooms, and the renovations of both the gym and field.
The Parent Pledge Program is critical to the school’s success because the true cost to educate your child is more than tuition alone. The benefit of making a Parent Pledge gift instead of paying higher tuition is that this gift is tax deductible.
In 2020–21, we received pledges as low as $400 and as high as $12,000 over four years. We hope that all parents will consider a pledge that falls somewhere in between. Some will do less and some will do more— what counts is that all families participate at a level that feels right and is within their means. Those who choose to pledge $12,000 or more over 4 years will be invited to our Annual President’s Dinner in the fall.
Support Riordan through the Parent Pledge Program
Thank you for partnering with us to provide the best possible experience for your child, and helping us fulfill our mission to provide all of our students with a Catholic education in the Marianist tradition.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss the program in more depth please don’t hesitate to contact me. My phone number and email are listed below.
Sincerely,
Anne Seppi

Text Messages
In addition to email channels, Riordan uses a platform called School Messenger to send texts to parents. One evening this summer you will receive a text to the mobile numbers you provided in PowerSchool. Please reply to the text with a Y or Yes to opt in to this system.
After that initial message, to opt in, send a text message with the letter Y or YES to the number 67587. You can also send a text message to this number to check the status of your registration. Again, your cell phone must be registered in PowerSchool for this to work.
Welcome from Principal Tim Reardon
Dear Crusader,
Welcome to the family!
Despite the unpredictable challenges we all have faced over the past twelve months, I’m proud to say that the Archbishop Riordan High School community has truly grown stronger.
- After the quarantine, Riordan was the first high school in San Francisco to announce our reopening.
- We welcomed our largest freshman class in decades, and, for the first time, the unit included an amazing group of girls.
- We brought in a truly extraordinary team of new teachers, counselors, administrators, and coaches.
- Our House System, now in its fourth year, has become an effective apparatus designed for inclusion, mentorship, and growth.
- Our new and remodeled athletic facilities are the envy of other high schools.
- In short, our community has grown, but it is more dedicated and loyal than it has ever been.
Like any strong family, we are excited to help you reach your potential in a safe and welcoming environment. Riordan’s systems have been devised to provide the most leadership opportunities possible in a high school setting, and our size allows us to deliver the kind of personal attention required to help you see all possibilities and to acquire the skills necessary to follow your dreams.
Congratulations and Welcome!
We R Family.
Sincerely,
Mr. Tim Reardon
Principal
