Safety Information

Archbishop Riordan's Safety Team plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of the Riordan Community. We have implemented safety procedures and protocols to maintain a safe and secure environment throughout the school year. We ask each member of the community to help us maintain a safe and secure environment.

Safety Procedures / Protocols

Emergency Drill Protocol

We conduct emergency drills throughout the school year. Families receive three notifications (email, phone call, and text).

Please do not call or respond during drills. It slows our ability to focus on student and staff safety.

In a real emergency, do not call the school. We will contact families by text, call, and email once the situation is assessed. For larger events (such as tsunami warnings), we follow guidance from local authorities and the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

Pickup/Drop-Off Procedure

Two major construction projects are underway next to campus off Frida Kahlo Way. After consultation with the construction foreman, the rear parking lot is closed to all drop-off and pick-up traffic due to serious concerns about backups and accidents caused by sharing the road with construction trucks.

Only teachers and staff are permitted in the rear parking lot during the school day.

The former Zone 2 road is now a one-way exit-only route from the parking lot onto Frida Kahlo Way and is expected to create significant delays.

Recommended ways to get students to school:

  • Public transit
  • Ride-hailing services
  • Drop-off north of the school between Greenwood Avenue and Monterey Boulevard
  • Front-of-school drop-off on Frida Kahlo Way

Students who drive: Please note that non-timed parking spaces are limited. Allow extra time to arrive on campus.

Picking Up Students Early

Call (415) 586-8200, ext. 250 or email attendance@riordanhs.org in advance so your student is ready. (See handbook pages 23 and 31. Are these still the correct pages?)

Dropping Off Items

A Safety Team member is stationed at the front of the school throughout the day. Hand items directly to them; students may pick them up at the front desk.

Medication Distribution

Call the school ahead of time if you need to administer medication. This allows us to pull your student from class promptly.

Returning to Campus After Dismissal

Students who leave at the 1:55 PM dismissal have a 15-minute grace period (until 2:10 PM) to re-enter through the front entrance or rear gates (if open). Re-entry after 2:10 PM results in detention. All students may re-enter through the front entrance at 3:00 PM.

Locker Room

Locker rooms are for changing before and after classes, practices, and events, as well as for team meetings. Refrain from eating and mere socializing; respect the space and take care of your belongings/surroundings. Lock all personal belongings in a locker (check that it is securely locked) and do not share locker combo information with anyone (reach out to Athletic Directors about locker assignments). Adhere to the posted open hours in the mornings and afternoons each school day at the locker room entrance. Students should not prop doors; only adults are allowed to lock or unlock locker rooms. Make sure you have your essential belongings on hand during the school day, as we will not allow in-and-out access throughout the school day (ask the Safety Team for a school building locker if needed). Any students in the locker room without permission and not following the rules will be assigned detention.

September Safety Month

Be on the lookout! During September, we will provide video updates in the family newsletter to help you and your student maintain a safe environment at and around Archbishop Riordan. Here is a video of our emergency action plan that you can review with your student to ensure they keep their safety.

Safety Updates

ATTENTION!!!

In Zone 2, both sides of the street are fire lanes and have worn-out paint, with signs stating 'no stopping' in effect. Starting in late September/early October, with the commencement of two construction projects and numerous large vehicles entering and exiting daily, CCSF police will enforce North Road (Zone 2 Pickup/Drop-Off), ensuring that no parked or double-parked cars are on either side of the street.

Please use zone 1 or zone 3, which is the rear parking lot (available only during certain hours; please refer to the times above). Alternatively, consider dropping off and picking up a few blocks away from campus to help reduce traffic congestion.
