A Day in the Life
Here is a typical academic day of a Riordan boarding student.
7:15 am – 8:30 am
Wake Up and Breakfast
Your day begins with a friendly wake up from a member of the boarding staff 30 minutes before your first class, which either starts at 7:45 am or 9:05 am. During this time, you can visit the cafeteria for breakfast, which is served from 7:00 am – 8:00 am every weekday for boarding and day students.
7:45 am – 2:20 pm
On a Regular Schedule day, you will have four 80-minute blocks of classes. For more information on the academic experience at Riordan, visit our Academics page. Between classes, we have a 10-minute break for munch and a 45-minute break for lunch.
On a weekly basis, you will meet with your Mentor Group, which is a mixed-grade level group of 24 students led by a Mentor Teacher within your assigned House. Learn more about Mentor Groups and Riordan's House System here.
2:20 pm – 5:30 pm
Activities and Sports
During this time, you may meet with your teachers at after school office hours, attend sports practice with your coaches and team, rehearse for a theatrical or band performance, or sign out to go off campus. These are just a few of your options. The weight room is also reserved from 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays solely for our students in our boarding program.
From 2:20 pm through 11:00 pm, a member of the boarding staff will be on duty and available to help and support you.
5:30 pm – 6:30 pm
From Monday through Friday, the Cafeteria serves dinner at 5:30 pm. If you are attending a sports practice and will be missing dinner, the boarding staff member on duty will happily save you a plate.
6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Shortly after dinner, you might hang out in the boarding program's recreation room—playing ping pong, pool, or poker with your boarding brothers.
8:00 pm – 11:00 pm
On weekdays, the boarding staff will do the first check-in of the evening at 8:00 pm. Boarders must be back in the dorm by this time. In the evenings, you'll be doing homework in the study lounge, enjoying some down time, or getting ready for bed.
11:00 pm – 9:00 am
The final check-in of the night is at 11:00 pm. Out of respect for the other members of the boarding community, who may be studying for an exam or fast asleep, quiet hours begin at 11:00 pm.
The weekend begins on Friday evening, when our boarding staff programs activities that appeal to a range of young men—from attending a San Francisco 49ers football game, to watching the latest movie, to volunteering at the local food bank.
Leaving Campus After School
After school ends at 2:20 pm, you are welcome to go off campus to spend time with friends, grab some boba, run errands, or explore the city.
