4x4 Schedule

What Is the 4x4 Block Schedule?

Riordan uses a 4x4 block schedule. Students take four courses each semester, and each course meets every day for 80 minutes [VERIFY period length]. One semester of a 10 unit course covers the same material a full year covers on a traditional schedule, which means students can complete up to eight courses in a single school year instead of the six a traditional schedule allows.

What Are Riordan's Specialty Programs?

Riordan offers three specialty programs: Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, and Business. Each one works like a college major. Students follow a focused sequence of courses across their four years while completing the full college preparatory curriculum. Students apply to a program and are admitted based on interest and readiness

ARTS

The Band

Our band takes students far beyond the rehearsal room. Members perform in concerts throughout the year, march in parades, back the cast of the spring musical, and travel internationally to play for audiences well outside San Francisco. Along the way they build real musical skill and a section to call their own, and no prior experience is required to join. What starts as a class often turns into four years of friendships and some of the best memories students take with them.

Theatre

Two productions a year, a fall play and a spring musical, give students the chance to build something from the ground up and put it in front of a live audience. On stage or behind it, students learn to take direction, solve problems on the fly, and trust the people working beside them. No experience is necessary to audition or join the crew, and many students find their closest friendships in the weeks leading up to opening night.

Studio Art

Students work with real materials and real technique, from drawing and painting to design and mixed media. Courses build skill step by step, so beginners and experienced artists both find a place to grow. Along the way students develop a portfolio, learn to critique their own work and each other's, and see their pieces displayed across campus.

Riordan's campus blends classic architecture with modern touches. Architect Paul Ryan drew on inspiration from the Doge’s Palace in Venice and the Stockholm Town Hall when he designed the entrance to the school.

House System

Four Houses, One Roof

Launched in the the fall of 2017, the House System provides a platform to foster strong bonds between students and adult mentors, promote school spirit and camaraderie, and drive healthy competition.
