This is an immersion trip in service, justice, and culture focusing on New Orleans. The trip begins with departure to New Orleans Monday April 5th, and concludes with return to San Francisco on Saturday, April 10th. The immersion trip will involve several days of service work in the city of New Orleans. This may involve difficult manual labor. Applicants are advised they should be prepared to take on any work selected for our group by our host organization. Service as understood in this context is rooted in the Christian faith. Though participants are not required to have any particular religious affiliation for participation in this trip, they must be prepared for reflection and prayer time in conjunction with service work. This requires a degree of openness on the part of the participants and willingness to contribute meaningfully to group reflection. Additionally the trip will include immersion into the culture of New Orleans.

The Archbishop Riordan Immersion Trip
  • Monday, April 5th through Saturday, April 10th
  • 24-hour a day supervision by 2 Riordan faculty members, and a terrific opportunity to contribute to the greater community.
  • Total cost = approximately $820
  • Payment to include = Airfare, 3 meals a day on most days.
  • Transportation while in New Orleans, four days of volunteer work.
  • Housing for the days in New Orleans, April 5 to April 10.
The immersion experience will be closely supervised by ARHS personnel. Students will spend long days in service, living in community, praying and playing together.

Parents are welcome to email Mr. Datoc at, adatoc@riordanhs.org with any questions.

Why do you want to go on the New Orleans immersion trip?

What do you hope to learn from this trip?

What special qualities, talents and/or skills can you contribute to this trip?

This trip may be physically and emotionally challenging. Describe an experience in which you faced a personal challenge. How did you approach the challenge? How did you cope with your struggle? What, if anything, did you learn about yourself from this situation?

Spirituality and theological reflection are an integral part of this trip. Are you willing to participate fully in these events? What part does spirituality and faith (Christian or other) play in your life?

Have you been involved in the past with Campus Ministry, your own church or youth group? What experience have you had with retreats (attending or leading) or group activities with these groups?

Write about an interesting service experience you have had…

Why would you be a good representative of ARHS on this trip?

Because of the way these trips are organized, it will be difficult to accommodate special diets. Are there any foods you cannot eat? If so, will this affect your ability to participate?

Remember that:
  • The application is due Wednesday, February 24th, and you will be notified if your son has been selected on Thursday, February 25th.
  • A deposit of $350.00 is due by Friday, February 26, 2010. Please make a check out to, Archbishop Riordan High School, and submit to Mr. Datoc, Mr.Vezzali or Mr. Sabalvaro.

This includes attendance of at least one parent/guardian on Thursday, March 4th, meeting at 6:30 pm in Room 222. Failure to attend (or failure to have a parent/guardian attend the March 4th meeting) may affect your participation status.
  • Your New Orleans experience will be an intense time of service work and living in community.
  • This is an alcohol/tobacco/drug free trip. Appropriate behavior is expected at all times.
  • Any behavior that is detrimental to the group or other groups will result of dismissal from the Immersion Trip at the expense of the student’s family.
