RSP Department
Application Process - incoming freshmen Archbishop Riordan High School understands that students learn in a variety of ways. Over the past several years, ARHS has developed strategies to assist our students who have diagnosed mild/moderate learning disabilities. ARHS strives to provide services to students who meet the program’s admission criteria, indicating that they will be able to succeed in a college preparatory curriculum given individualized accommodations. The most important consideration for each student is to ensure that the services we provide will adequately meet the needs of the applicant. The Resource Specialist Program cannot modify the curriculum or graduation requirements, but is able to make reasonable accommodations for students with special needs. Currently, we accept sixteen incoming freshmen who meet both our Documentation Guidelines and our Selection Criteria. 1. Preliminary Review Students with diagnosed learning disabilities who are requesting
to receive services from the Resource Specialist Program are required
to indicate their intent to receive services from the Resource
Specialist Program in the appropriate section of the application.
Along with the application, submit a copy of the documentation
that meets the specific documentation requirements under Documentation
Guidelines to the Admissions Office by the filing date. Our Resource
Specialist Team will review the test results, and if needed, a
follow-up meeting may be scheduled. We want to ensure that the
students who need services can succeed in the ARHS college preparatory
curriculum with the assistance of the RSP. The diagnosis and recommendations
in the professional testing are invaluable in helping make this
decision. By providing us with this professional testing early
on, we can make a preliminary determination as to whether our support
services will be adequate to meet the applicant’s needs.
In most cases we find that our support services may be adequate,
but we only accept a limited amount of students (currently we are
accepting 16 students into the Freshman class). In other cases
it is clear that the best interests of the student can be better
met in a more comprehensive program.
2. The Admissions and Testing Process All applicants to ARHS and any other Catholic High School in the Diocese will be required to take an entrance exam. An extended time admissions test is available to students whose professional testing indicates the need for extended testing time. In order to qualify, it is required that a report certifying the student’s disability, be on file in the Admissions Office by the filing date. Please call the Admissions Office to obtain an application for the Extended Time Test.
3. Determination of Specific Support Services Needed for the Student After the final selection, we will request that each student provide us with an ARHS RSP Transition Form that is to be completed by their current teachers and persons supporting their learning disabilities (Learning Specialists, Educational Therapists, etc.). These forms along with the diagnostic professional testing will be used to summarize which of our support services will be needed for the students who have been selected for the RSP.
