How do we teach Language other than English (LOTE's) at Riordan High School?
We offer three LOTE's at Riordan: Spanish (I-AP), Italian (I-III), and ASL
I-II (American Sign Language). All three languages stress communicative proficiency
over grammatical accuracy in the lower levels, with direct instruction of
grammar beginning in Level 3.
Beginning in the 2006-2007 school year we will offer a Spanish IV and an ASL
III course.
A typical first year student in Spanish & Italian will have the ability
(and the desire!) to converse in everyday topics; in past, present, and future
tenses. Listening and writing are woven into the fabric of instruction. ASL
students can do the same albeit in a slightly different medium.
Summer trips to Costa Rica and Italy are designed to offer students the opportunity
to experience another culture and offer a means of legitimate, real-world practice
and assessment of their skills.
