English Department The English Department's curriculum reflects two fundamental assumptions. First, it is essential that each student be able to express oneself effectively in writing and in speaking. Second, the ability to read a wide range of literature is critical - to understand his world and himself, appreciate the subtleties and power of language, and understand the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their reading audience. In order to foster these objectives, the English classes engage each student to develop critical thinking, reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through the study of literary work with integrity from a variety of writers and genres. Teaching students to write in various modes is critical to our program. Developing these skills prepares students to meet the demands of college work both in literature and composition. The English program prepares students to successfully meet the demands in other settings where strong communication skills are crucial.
