ASL I - E Ten Credits Open to Grades 10, 11 and 12 PREREQUISITES: None DESCRIPTION: The American Sign Language Program curriculum is an intensive program of study designed to assist students in acquiring competence in American Sign Language and to develop an understanding of the American Deaf Community and its culture. The class will divide its time between practicing to develop communicative competency in the language and lecture and discussion of the history of ASL. ASL II - E Ten Credits Open to Grade 10, 11 and 12 PREREQUISITES: C or better in ASL I DESCRIPTION: ASL II takes the skills developed in ASL I and expands upon them. Students will increase their signing proficiency and engage in authentic assessment through community service in the Deaf World. Class lectures and discussions move from the history of ASL to an awareness of issues facing deaf students in schools and deaf services available in the Bay Area.
Ten Credits Open to Grade 10, 11 and 12 PREREQUISITES: C or better in ASL II DESCRIPTION: : American Sign Language (ASL) III immerses the student into the art of storytelling. Students study and appreciate full-length ASL narratives through ASL Literature. The literary choices serve as a mirror for the Deaf community’s culture, and it offers an unparalleled opportunity to study how a language is used and how it reflects the culture of the community. In addition, the stories help the students to analyze the experience and lessons of being deaf. Specific lessons focus some instruction on the various methodologies of using ASL, yet the primary focus remains developing the ability to tell (and comprehend) stories in ASL. Italian I - E Ten Credits Open to Grade 10, 11 and 12 PREREQUISITES: None DESCRIPTION: The first year of Italian introduces the student to the sound system of the language and to a number of basic structure and vocabulary drills. Among the highlights of first-year instruction are: gender and articles; regular verbs; negative and irregular verb forms; the irregular verbs; numbers; telling time; correct adjective usage; and the partitive article. Additional material on Italian culture and geography, the monuments of Italy, and important episodes from Italian history are introduced at various intervals during the course. Italian II - E Ten Credits Open to Grade 10, 11 and 12 PREREQUISITES: C or better in Italian I. DESCRIPTION: : Second-year Italian continues the student’s development of listening and speaking skills and reviews difficult aspects of the Italian language. Longer, more challenging narratives are employed to increase grammar and vocabulary skills. Additional material on Italian culture, geography, and history are also presented. Greater stress is placed on oral proficiency. Italian III - E Ten Credits Open to Grade 11 and 12 PREREQUISITES: C or better in Italian II. DESCRIPTION: Third-year Italian continues the student’s development of listening and speaking skills and reviews difficult aspects of the Italian Language. Longer, more challenging narratives are employed to increase grammar and vocabulary skills. Highlights of this course include: relative pronouns; reflexive verbs; double object pronouns; the imperfect, conditional and future tenses; and special adjectives and adverbs. Additional material on Italian culture, geography, and history are also presented. Greater stress is placed on oral proficiency. Italian IV - G Ten Credits Open to Grade 11 and 12 PREREQUISITES: C or better in Italian III. DESCRIPTION: Italian IV builds upon the speaking and grammar of Italian III, but makes a concerted effort to help students achieve communicative proficiency at an advanced level in order to prepare for AP Italian. As a result, Italian IV narrows the focus of instruction to communicative functions: describing, comparing, recommending and expressing opinions, recounting the past, expressing likes and dislikes, hypothesizing, and talking about the future. Spanish I - E Ten Credits Open to Grade 10 PREREQUISITES: None DESCRIPTION: Spanish I introduces the student to the phonetic system of the Spanish language. A sufficient number of basic structure and vocabulary drills are presented to aid the student in building comprehension, listening, and speaking skills in order to establish a rich environment for communication in the target language. Students are exposed to some of the cultural aspects of Spain and Latin America. Spanish II - E Ten Credits Open to Grades 10 and 11 PREREQUISITES: C or better in Spanish I. DESCRIPTION: Spanish II is a continuation of Spanish I. Additional emphasis is placed on reading comprehension, writing skills and more communication between students in the target language. The program includes a review of concepts presented in Spanish I; specifically the use of the preterit and imperfect within the same structure and introduces students to more complex grammatical structures of the language in order to facilitate the achievement of a higher level of these skills. Exposure to some of the cultures of Spain and Latin America is included. Spanish III - E Ten Credits Open to Grades 11 and 12 PREREQUISITES: B or better in Spanish II or teacher recommendation. DESCRIPTION: Spanish III is a continuation of Spanish II, with much greater emphasis placed on communication, writing, reading and listening skills. The student’s comprehension and speaking skills are enhanced at this point as the course is taught almost exclusively in the target language. Spanish IV - G Ten Credits Open to Grades 11 and 12 PREREQUISITES: B or better in Spanish III or teacher recommendation. DESCRIPTION: Spanish IV continues the cultural exploration of the Hispanic World through readings, but it also adds award winning short films from Spanish speaking countries. Students refine and advance their grammatical comprehension vis a vis the films and engaging, comprehensible readings. A.P. Spanish Language - G Ten Credits Open to Grades 11 and 12 PREREQUISITES: B or better in Spanish III or Spanish II; recommendation of instructor & department chairman. DESCRIPTION: Fourth-year Spanish prepares students for the Advanced Placement Spanish test administered near the end of the spring semester. Students are exposed to a variety of media in Spanish, such as novels, short stories, poetry, popular songs, plays, newspaper articles, and essays. Aside from the specific grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking components of the A.P. test which are extensively practiced during the course of the year, students are taken through an in-depth study of the Spanish-speaking world from historical, literary, and cultural perspectives. |
