Summer Programs at Riordan

High School Enrichment - (for current high school students):
Dates: June 11 - July 13
Fees: $500 per course
Session 1 runs from 8:00 - 10:30
Session 2 runs from 11:00 - 1:30

ARHS offers a wide range of courses in our summer school program. These courses are for students currently attending high school. They may be taken for enrichment or to repair grades for courses already taken.* All courses are worth 5 credits. Students should refer to their school counselor or appropriate administrator to verify that ARHS summer courses will be accepted at their school.

Summer school will begin on June 11th and run through July 13th. Session 1 is from 8:00 am to 10:30 am. Session 2 is from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm. Wednesday, July 4th will be a holiday in honor of Independence Day. The last day to register for classes without a late fee is Monday, June 4th. After June 4th, a $50 fee will be added.

The Crusader Experience - (for members of the class of 2016 that have been accepted to ARHS)

This week-long camp is new this year. It allows students an opportunity to create new friendships with their Crusader brothers and to better prepare themselves for high school life. Students will placed in one of two groups. Each group will have an hour session each day on conditioning and weight training, public speaking and presentation skills, and seminars each day on various topics including, leadership, organization, note taking and test preparation, etiquette, and other themes. Students will be provided lunch each day. The second have of each day (12-3) the group will be taken to various locations to preform community service. These hours will count towards the required 100 that all ARHS students need to graduate. This camp will give the group a chance to bond and be better prepared for their high school years

Freshmen Academic Introduction will run the following four weeks - (for members of the class of 2016 that have been accepted to ARHS)

English Courses

English Enhancement I

This course provides a review of the basic structures of grammar, writing and vocabulary at the 9th and 10th grade level. Students will also strengthen their skills in reading comprehension. (Validates Archbishop Riordan High School´s Introduction to Composition/Literature or World Literature courses.)

English Enhancement II

This course reviews a more advanced level of reading and writing at the 11th and 12th grade level. Students enrolled in this course will learn the various literary types and how to write about them in a variety of modes. (Validates Archbishop Riordan High School´s American Literature or 20th Century Novel courses.)

Mathematics Courses

Algebra I, Semester 1 & 2

Algebra I is a review of the content and skills of a first year Algebra class. Emphasis will be placed on the real number system, polynomial and exponential expressions, factoring, solving linear and quadratic equations, systems of equations, and graphing in one and two dimensions.

Geometry, Semester 1 & 2

Geometry is a review of the content and skills of a first year Geometry class. Emphasis will be placed on studying congruent segments and angles, circle chords, secants and tangent segments, parallel and perpendicular lines, angle measure in triangles, direct and indirect triangle congruence and similarity, proofs, solids of revolution, logic, similar triangles, transformations, the Pythagorean Theorem, geometric constructions, coordinate geometry, and surface area and volume of solids.

Modern Language Courses

Spanish I/II

This is a review course of basic Spanish grammar and vocabulary. Students will focus on the present and past tenses and conversational vocabulary. Some time will also be spent studying the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries.

Spanish III/IV

Students will build on the their knowledge of the past and subjunctive tenses as well as their ability to read short works of literature and the integration of the four communicative skills.

Science Courses

Geology, Semester 1 & 2

This is a course that reinforces the knowledge of the Geology. Topics will include: geology and the methods of science, minerals, maps and mapping, igneous rocks and processes, volcanoes and volcanism, weathering and soils, sedimentation and sedimentary rocks, weathering and soils, metamorphism and metamorphic rocks, geologic time, glaciers, structural geology, earthquakes, and plate tectonics.

Biology, Semester 1 & 2

This is a lab course that reinforces the knowledge of the structures and functions of living things. Emphasis will be placed on the scientific method, cell structures and function, photosynthesis, and animal systems and organs.

Social Science Courses

World History 1 & 2

World History 1 & 2

World History will provide an overview of human history, the interaction between societies and the continuous progress made by humans. Students will develop their ability to read and interpret primary sources and their writing skills. (Validates Archbishop Riordan High School´s Early World History or Modern World History courses.)

Theology Courses

Life Issues

This course is designed stimulate an awareness of the fundamental areas of economic and political systems as they relate to total world development and basic human needs and rights. Issues addressed include poverty, sexism, racism, life-choice, the aged, the environment, violence, nuclear proliferation, criminal justice, and economic justice. (Validates Archbishop Riordan High School´s Life Issues course.)

Visual and Performing Art Courses

Digital Media

In this course students will examine web based media and the many digital formats that are being used to communicate information. Emphasis will be placed on the artistic design, integration of digital formats to effectively enhance the product as well as an understanding of their “client and clientele”. (Validates Archbishop Riordan High School´s Digital Media or Graphic Design course.)

* For ARHS students, they can only be taken to repair grades.

Middle School Academics with Camp Crusader:

Middle school age children (grades 5 and 6 for girls and 5 through 8 for boys) can sign up to also attend Camp Crusader from 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM after the academic portion of the day concludes.

Fees: $950

Elementary Math - Grade 5 and 6

This course includes a review of Grade 4, with an emphasis on multiplication and division, and Grade 5, which includes basic operations with fractions and decimals. Mathematical language and vocabulary are also stressed. Word problems are used to help develop students' reasoning skills. Order of operations is introduced, and the solution of word problems is emphasized to promote growth of reasoning skills. • Recommended Grades 5-6

Math - Pre-Algebra

Pre-algebra: Recommended for most students entering the 7th grade. This course strengthens the student's foundation in fractions, decimals, percentages, and operations with negative numbers. Students will also learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide variable expressions. • Recommended Grades 7

Math - Algebra

Recommended for most students entering the 8th grade. This course is for students who will be taking algebra in the fall or who have taken some algebra already, but did not study it in detail or did not fully understand it. Students will learn the distributive property, operations with variables, simplifying expressions, solving equations, basic word problems, and linear functions. • Recommended Grades 8

Public Speaking

This course is an introduction to public speaking. Emphasis is placed on gaining experience as a speaker in front of an audience or as a member of a group. Students are instructed in form (posture, delivery, and diction) and content (choice of topic, organization, and development). Topics covered include informative, persuasive, and instructive speeches, formal readings, and group discussions. • Recommended Grades 5-8

Study Skills

The emphasis of this course is using practical and proven strategies to build better study skills. Organization methods and tips, listening skills, memorization techniques, time management, note-taking methods, test-taking strategies, and research skills are included. Throughout the course, individual learning styles, strengths, and weaknesses are considered. • Recommended Grades 5-8

The Bee!

This class will give students a fun way to build their vocabulary and begin to understand the meaning of words based on the root word it was derived from. The class will conclude with the first annual Summer @ ARHS Spelling Bee, and a Champion being crowned . • Recommended Grades 5-8

Reading and Writing Workshop

This class is set up for students whose reading and writing skills are still emerging. The course offers the opportunity to develop multiple comprehension strategies that can help boost a student's enjoyment of reading. • Recommended Grades 5-6

The Rise of Pop/Rock Stars

This course is intended to reinforce and build on the student's existing skills in the English language, through studying the music genres from the 80´s to today. The course goals will include work in grammar, spelling, vocabulary, writing organization, and a review of basic composition techniques. • Recommended Grades 5-6

The 80´s

Emphasis is placed on higher-level cognitive skills in reading and writing, speaking, and listening. Skill-building through the writing process, a focus on combining paragraphs into essays, and interpretation of literature are stressed. This class will look back at the 80´s and how sports, politics, and societal changes influenced the world we live in today. • Recommended Grades 7-8

The Crusader Capitalist

Capitalism is making the world a smaller place. International trade has companies in the U.S., China, Germany and many other countries doing business together, but all this international trade began as a simple idea that someone worked on in their garage, backyard or living room. You know you have a great idea for a product or service that can make you the next Steve Jobs. Come to Riordan this summer and see what it takes to make that idea/dream a reality. You will learn the business basics from finding out who will be interested in buying your product to selling your product to even what it takes to swim in the "Shark Tank"© (ABC Television) and get investors to give you money to sell your product on a grand scale. Come and bring out the Crusader Capitalist in you and swim with the sharks with no fear. • Recommended Grades 7-8

Color - It's in the Mix: Painting Basics

Colors are all around us. Ever wonder how these colors are made? Using paint, students will discover how to mix all of the different colors, learn different color combinations, and explore the many things that colors can say. This class will help your young artist bring true life into their masterpieces. • Recommended Grades 5-8

It's Your World: Imagining Another Reality

Create a fantasy world. You will start by developing your own character, along with his or her friends. Then you will construct a world where the only limits for your character's adventures is your imagination! By the end of the class you will have a series of posters or a small book filled with your own universe. • Recommended Grades 5-8

Black & White and Everything in Between: Drawing Basics

For the older student who would like to improve his or her drawings skills, this class will develop your ability to draw what you see. You will learn traditional drawing and shading techniques using pencils and other black & white media. • Recommended Grades 7-8

Computer Basics

This is an introduction course on keyboarding and basic word processing software tools such as, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Students will learn how to format and prepare documents and learn how to utilize the statistical tools of Excel. Each class member will present a project at the end of the class that utilizes all the programs learned. • Recommended Grades 5-8

Quiet on the Set!

Learn the basics of filming and editing. Shoot with pro-level camcorders and learn how to shoot like the pros. Each student will take home a DVD of his or her final project. Learn all aspects of movie making and let your imagination run wild. Students will use Final Cut Pro® as well as other Apple video software. • Recommended Grades 5-8

Channel 6: The Action News!

Tune in to Summer at Archbishop Riordan - Channel 6: This class is designed to learn how to shoot and operate a live television broadcast. The class will also go out in the field for interviews and have camp segments that will be loaded on the summer school website. This class will teach students about television production on both sides of the camera. • Recommended Grades 5-8

The Magic of Graphic Design

Students will learn the basics of Photoshop and InDesign as well as learn about many of the powerful tools and secret features that can be unlocked in both of these programs. Students will learn how to layout a magazine, edit photos and apply various effects to make their work pop off the page. Students will help create a mini yearbook for the summer programs that they can take home as a keepsake. • Recommended Grades 5-8

Games of the World

Let´s play Down, Down, Down! How about a fun game of Kudoda? This fun class looks at various countries around the world and investigates the games and sports that are played that may not be familiar to students from America. Students will learn the history behind these games and participate in them. • Recommended Grades 5-6

Speed and Agility

Speed and Agility Camp is designed to help students in all sports improve their overall speed, quickness and agility. Throughout five intense training sessions, athletes will work on improving speed, agility, lateral quickness, foot speed, rapid acceleration, and first step quickness. In addition to the training completed during the Speed and Agility Camp, students will be taught training exercises and drills that they can complete at home to continue their improvement in these areas. • Recommended Grades 5-8


Camp Crusader is a summer sports program for boys entering 2nd through 8th grades and girls entering 2nd through 6th grades. For nearly 40 years, over 16,000 campers have participated in countless Camp Crusader activities! The day is divided into four sports classes. Campers will enjoy a variety of sports under the supervision of the Archbishop Riordan Coaching Staff and Varsity athletes. They will have an unforgettable experience and make new friends.

Camp Crusader takes place Monday through Friday from 9:45 a.m. to 2:35 p.m. each day. Campers may attend camp for two, three, or four weeks. Campers may be dropped off as early as 8:00 a.m. and picked up no later than 3:30 p.m. There will be movies and supervised play until camp begins at 9:45 a.m.

All activities take place on the Archbishop Riordan High School campus. Campers are grouped by grade level and with school classmates. Parents may also make grouping requests.

Camp runs from 9:45 - 2:35. Early drop off at 8:00 AM and After care until 3:00 PM is available at no cost.

A minimum of two weeks must be selected.

Fees: $375 for two weeks, $475 for three weeks, and $575 for four weeks of camp.
