The Herbst Foundation Library is a curriculum-based resource available to the students of Archbishop Riordan High. The extensive collections of books found here are primarily non-fiction and are routinely used in support of current coursework. Not only can a student perform his research or study activities, the Herbst Foundation Library also provides a relaxed atmosphere for reading or browsing the nation's leading newspapers and magazines.

Leading the Way in Technological Research

The Herbst Foundation Library is outfitted with several banks of Apple iMac computers, each connected to the school's central server where students have access to their individual server accounts.

The library computer systems browse the World Wide Web for online research while also allowing student access to the Archbishop Riordan Google for Education platform; where students can check their school e-mail, work on papers, spreadsheet or presentations.

The Herbst Foundation Library additionally offers a student copy machine ($0.15 cents per page), networked laser printers (free printing), wireless connectivity for electronic readers and mobile devices, study areas (both public and private), newspapers, magazines and an audio and videotape holdings room.

Follett Destiny Online Library Catalog ::

Every library computer has full access to Riordan's Follett Destiny Online Catalog, featuring our complete library holdings, as well as over 450 downloadable eBooks and audio books. Click here for a complete listing of downloadable eBooks.


When performing a search through the Follett Destiny Online Catalog, the search results page will display all available options: physical books held on the shelves, noted graphically as ; eBooks available for download, noted graphically as or an audio book available for download, noted graphically as . Audio books are not recorded by individual readers, but are text-to-speech computer recordings for those individuals that learn better through audio presentation.


The Herbst Foundation Library uses the Dewey Decimal System, a guide to call numbers to locate books by using letters and/or numbers 000 - 900. Physical books held locally will have a call number displayed on the results screen corresponding to their physical location on the shelf. By clicking the graphic for more details, demarked as , additional information is made available.

For instance, a search for "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain will result in options for the eBook, the Audio book recording or as the physical book held locally with the call sign of "FIC TWA", indicating that the book is a work of fiction located on the shelves at the location of "FIC TWA".

EBSCO Host Online Research Databases ::


The Herbst Foundation Library offers a large collection of online research databases through Riordan's EBSCO Host subscription. Students have access to these databases 24/7 from any computer in the world that has an Internet connection.

Students first sign into the database by using the login name: arhs and the password: crusaders (both are lower case). Once logged into the EBSCO Host portal, they can perform general searches of all databases by clicking on "General Reference, Newspapers, Magazines and More".

From there, they can create their own account by clicking on "Sign In", located in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and then clicking on "Create a New Account". Their own EBSCO account allows a student to save their searches, articles and research findings for future reference.


MAS Ultra - School Edition: Designed specifically for high school libraries, this database contains full text for nearly 500 popular, high school magazines. MAS Ultra - School Edition also provides more than 360 full text reference books, 85,670 biographies, over 107,000 primary source documents, and an Image Collection of over 510,000 photos, maps & flags, color PDFs and expanded full text backfiles (back to 1975) for key magazines.
Middle Search Plus provides full text for more than 140 popular, middle school magazines. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles). Full text is also available for thousands of biographies and historical essays. Middle Search Plus also contains 84,774 biographies, 105,786 primary source documents, and a School Image Collection of photos, maps and flags
Primary Search provides full text for more than 70 popular, magazines for elementary school research. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles), and full text information dates as far back as 1990.
History Reference Center offers full text from more than 1,620 reference books, encyclopedias and non-fiction books, cover to cover full text for more than 150 leading history periodicals, nearly 57,000 historical documents, more than 78,000 biographies of historical figures, more than 113,000 historical photos and maps, and more than 80 hours of historical video.
Religion & Philosophy Collection(TM) provides extensive coverage of such topics as world religions, major denominations, biblical studies, religious history, epistemology, political philosophy, philosophy of language, moral philosophy and the history of philosophy. With more more than 300 full text journals, the Religion & Philosophy Collection is an essential tool for researchers and students of theology and philosophical studies.
Health Source: Consumer Edition provides access to nearly 80 full text, consumer health magazines. This database is the richest collection of consumer health information available to libraries worldwide, providing information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health.
Newspaper Source provides cover-to-cover full text for more than 40 (U.S.) & international newspapers. The database also contains selective full text for 389 regional (U.S.) newspapers. In addition, full text television & radio news transcripts are also provided.
Professional Development Collection is the most comprehensive collection of full text education journals in the world. Designed for professional educators, this database provides a highly specialized collection of nearly 520 high quality education journals, including more than 350 peer-reviewed titles. This database also contains more than 200 educational reports.
ERIC, the Education Resource Information Center, contains more than 1.3 million records and links to more than 323,000 full-text documents dating back to 1966.
TOPICsearch contains full text for over 60,000 articles from 399 diverse sources including international and regional newspapers, EBSCO's unparalleled collection of periodicals, biographies, public opinion polls, book reviews, pamphlets, and government information.
Advanced Placement Source is designed to meet the extensive needs of high school students enrolled in various AP courses. It offers a world of knowledge for students who seek to achieve academic excellence. Advanced Placement Source contains more than 5,550 full-text academic journals and magazines and over 502,000 photos, maps and flags

Library Policies
In order to maintain a proper library atmosphere, conducive to study and research, the following rules and policies are enforced.


The library is a place of study and students have the right to a peaceful and quiet atmosphere in order to focus on studies.

  • Please whisper if you need to communicate with another student.
  • No eating or drinking is allowed in the library.
  • No cell phone use is allowed in the library.
  • All cell phones must be on silent mode in the library.

  • Library computers are to be used for academic work only. This includes research, working on school papers and projects and using the Riordan Google for Education platform (student -issued email only).
  • Playing games, using Social Media (ie: Facebook, MySpace, etc), Twitter, instant messaging/chatting, or other personal use that is not academically focused is prohibited on all library computers or on personal electronic devices inside the library at all times.
  • When printing to the library laser printer, please perform a print preview to view your document and note the number of pages you are printing.
  • While there are no fees to use the library laser printer, you may only print school assignments and homework.
  • The library has student wireless (WiFi) connectivity for students' personal electronic devices, which may be used for schoolwork. The password is riordancrusaders (all lowercase, one-word).
  • Always log out of your computer account at the end of your session.
  • Always clean up your area and push your chair in as you leave quietly.

  • Books may be checked out for a two-week period (14 days).
  • Students are limited to checking out five books at a time.
  • Books may be requested through the Follett Destiny Online Catalog.
  • Books may be renewed at the library counter.
  • $0.25 cent late fee is added on a per day basis for late returns.
  • Reference books cannot be checked out of the library, but circulating books can be checked out.
  • All library books are shelved under the Dewey Decimal System.

  • These items may be checked out by arrangement with the librarian.
  • In most cases, only 1 video may be checked out at a time.
  • Videos or audio media may be checked out for 1 week.
  • $0.25 cent late fee is added on a per day basis for late returns.
  • Students also have access to Riordan's Follett Destiny Online Catalog, featuring our complete library holdings, as well as over 450 downloadable eBooks and audio books.
